11. How to Change Shells

The Center for Advanced Research computing offers different Linux shells on our supercomputers. The default for new users is tcsh. The instructions below will take you through the process of changing your shell.

On any CARC system you can change your shell by doing the following:
Type: ypchsh
Enter your password when prompted.
You will be prompted to choose a shell. CARC offers bash, csh, and tcsh. All are located in /bin.

After you make the change you must log off of the machine and log back in order for the new shell to take effect.
