Jackson Middle School Students Tour CARC

March 23, 2015

A group of twenty students from Jackson Middle School visited the Center for Advanced Research Computing (CARC), as part of a day-long tour of UNM which also included visits to the Computer Science Department, the ARTS Lab, and IFDM. The CARC tour group explored the Center’s three-dimensional planetarium dome; interacted in a supercomputing demo; and participated in a short lecture on scientific visualization, which covered topics such as currents on the globe, Facebook network maps, and the motor protein kinesin. The Jackson Middle School students are working on NetLogo and developing computational thinking. Many of them are actively engaged in their own computational projects, and after the tour were able to contact CARC research scientists to obtain access to resources that were part of the demonstrations—such as network mapping software, and a cancer protein databank.
